Getting small details right in your writing makes a big difference to how clearly your ideas come across. Words like there, their, and they’re sound the same, but each one has a completely different job.

Let’s break down the differences so you can use the right word for what you want to say.

Understanding the difference

Here is how to tell them apart:

👉THERE refers to a place.

Example: The classroom is over there.

  • Memory trick: Look for the word HERE inside THERE.

👉THEIR shows that something belongs to a person or group.

Example: It’s their car.

  • Memory trick: Look for the letter I inside THEIR (think: I own it).

👉 THEY’RE is short for they are.

Example: They’re preparing for the presentation.

  • Memory trick: Look for the apostrophe (’) inside THEY’RE (shows two words combined: THEY + ARE).

Why it matters

Getting small language points right keeps your writing clear and easy to read. When you can spot these differences without stopping to second-guess yourself, you can express your ideas more confidently, personally or in the workplace.

The golden rule

When you focus on function, the choice becomes instant:

  • Function: Location or place ➔ use there

  • Function: Possession or belonging ➔ use their

  • Function: Action/state of being (they + are) ➔ use they’re
